Marcus Rashford has been pipped to the post in the prestigious Golden Boy awards, as reported by the Mirror.
The Manchester United starlet was being widely tipped for glory having enjoyed such an impressive 2016, but he was narrowly beaten by Portuguese wonderkid Renato Sanches.
It’s no surprise the Bayern Munich youngster, 19, has been acknowledged, though Rashford was of course in with a shout.
Sanches helped Portugal to lift the Euro 2016 trophy and starring for Bayern under new manager Carlo Ancelotti, who replaced Pep Guardiola in the summer.
What’s most frustrating for United is that Sanches could have in fact joined them instead of the Bundesliga side, but it didn’t happen because of the confusion surrounding who would be managing the club this season.
Even if he hasn’t triumphed this time, though, Rashford will no doubt be delighted with the progress he’s made over the last eight months, earning a call-up to England’s senior side and scoring the winner in a Manchester derby.
Tottenham’s Dele Alli was also one of the favourites, but he too has missed out, while Kingsley Coman was also beaten.
