Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Loris Karius is Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper – at least for now.
The summer signing is set to sit out the Reds’ clash with Tottenham on Tuesday night, but that is only because it’s an EFL Cup game.
That has paved the way for Simon Mignolet’s return, but it may well be a one-off appearance for the Belgian.
The stopper filled in for Karius at the start of the season when the £4.7million signing had a broken wrist, suffered in pre-season, and unsurprisingly, he isn’t happy at being sidelined now the more junior ‘keeper is back.
Klopp revealed some while back that he would make his decision between the two based on what he saw on training, so it seems Mignolet is simply not shining enough.
“He (Mignolet) is a real professional, and we’ve had a few talks about it because I didn’t have the perfect answer for him,” Klopp said, as per Goal.com.
“I couldn’t say: ‘You are bad and he is good, that’s why he’s playing.’ This is what I call a luxury problem. We only had to make a decision, and I made it. Of course, he was not happy about it, but he is a very serious person, a good professional.”
“In this moment, we have a No.1, who is Loris, like we had a No.1 when he was injured, which was Simon.”
“That’s the situation, I cannot leave them in doubt. There was a short period with the two or three games which we gave to Loris to see a little more of him and after the last international break, I spoke with both of them and we made this decision.”
“This is the ranking, if you want, in this moment, Loris is the No. 1 and Simon is in this moment the No.2.”
Klopp is in a fortunate position to have the choice of two decent goalkeepers, but Mignolet’s start to the season was far from ideal.
It’s no wonder that Karius is number one right now, but the Spurs game will give Mignolet a much-needed opportunity to earn his place back.
