Chelsea are set to renew their interest in AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli as Antonio Conte continues to search for a solution to his side’s defensive woes.
That’s according to the Sun, who are reporting that the centre-back could set them back as much as £49million.
If the Blues are to contend for the title, however, they must be willing to act quickly, as their shoddy back line has already cost them plenty of points this season.
It does raise the question of why Conte brought David Luiz back to the club in the summer at such a high price, as the Brazilian doesn’t seem to have improved them at all.
And with Gary Cahill and John Terry both ageing and struggling with injuries, it’s becoming a matter of urgency that Chelsea find a long-term replacement for at least one of them.
Chelsea were knocked back when they tried to sign Romagnoli in the summer, but that was because they refused to pay the £49million.
Owner Roman Abramovich may now change his mind, though, even if Conte clearly didn’t rate the defender highly enough to include him in his Italy squad for Euro 2016.
Milan won’t give him up easily, so it is up to Chelsea to make the San Siro outfit an offer they can’t refuse.
