A new contract for Mata?

After starting the season brightly for Manchester United, Juan Mata is set to be offered a new and improved deal, reports the Mirror.

Mata’s future looked very uncertain following the arrival of Jose Mourinho – who originally sold him when he managed him at Chelsea. Mata’s sparkling form has meant that Mourinho will be the first to blink in any showdown regarding Mata’s future.

Although Mourinho has always maintained that he has no problem with the midfielder, most would struggle to believe this. He’s recently appeared to go a step further and suggest that it was not his decision to axe Mata from Chelsea.

Mata’s deal will cease at the end of the 17/18 season but it’s likely he’ll now commit his future to the Red Devils after forcing his way into the side.

Not only is this an astute move in terms of what he brings to the team on the pitch, it could also be hugely significant for Mourinho in terms of his relationship with the squad.

The Bastian Schweinsteiger affair had raised questions over the Portuguese’s ability to deal with high-profile players tactfully, but Mata has proven that hard work can change Mourinho’s mind.

Keeping Mata will also go down well with the fans, no doubt, so United are definitely making an important move here – and it’s fully deserved after his start to the season, too.
