La Liga round-up – Real still on top

Published by on December 20, 2016

It’s hard to see past Real Madrid for the La Liga title going into the winter break.

Los Blancos made it three trophies under Zinedine Zidane with victory over Kashima Antlers in the Club World Cup, a result which means they’ve now won more cups under Zizou than games lost.

SkyBet now have Real at 1/2 on to win the league, with Barcelona at 13/8.

That the next closest side, Atletico Madrid, are at 40/1 suggests it’s already a two-horse race.

The only consolation for Barca right now is that not only are they focusing on winning the Champions League – they play Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 – they’re also in with a decent chance in the league as long for as long as they boast the division’s two top-scorers.

Luis Suarez is at 6/4 to win the Golden Boot and Lionel Messi at 5/4, so their formidable attack could just see them trump Madrid, who are going to be without Gareth Bale until at least February, possibly even April depending on who you believe.

Cristiano Ronaldo is at 15/8 for that particular honour, though he’ll no doubt be content with the Ballon d’Or.

And just like his team more generally, Antoine Griezmann is way off the pace with just six goals this season, so he’s at 40/1.

It’s disappointing to see Atleti struggling in what could be Diego Simeone’s final season, and it’s remarkable that they’re still higher up in the betting than Sevilla, Real Sociedad, and Villarreal, all of whom are higher than them in the table.
