Championship preview

3 matches tonight in the Championship…

Newcastle vs QPR

Newcastle can’t afford to lose ground in the battle for automatic promotion, which makes QPR pretty ideal opposition. As you’d expect, the Londoners are at long odds of 7/1 to cause an upset, so it’s probably not worth backing them.

It’s not clear whether Magpies top scorer Dwight Gayle will be back from injury, making Jonjo Shelvey among the favourites to score first. If he does and Newcastle win 2-0, that’s at 22/1.

Blackburn vs Leeds

After suffering a shock FA Cup exit at the hands of non-league Sutton, the lowest-ranked side in the competition, Leeds will be desperate to bounce back at Ewood Park.

Blackburn may be second-bottom of the table, but they haven’t lost at home since December 17, including a surprise win over Newcastle. Leeds are 3/1 to win by just the one goal, recognising perhaps that this is a potential banana skin for Garry Monk’s side following their weekend slip-up.

Burton vs Fulham

Burton have received a huge boost with the news that manager Nigel Clough won’t be following in his father’s footsteps and taking the Nottingham Forest job. It’s probably for the best given that that didn’t go too well for him at Derby.

This shouldn’t be an easy game for Fulham, but there should be goals in it. Chris Martin’s favourite to score first at 4/1, and the visitors should find the back of the net given that only five teams in the Championship have scored more than them all season. We’re backing Fulham with over 2.5 goals at 7/4.
