Arsenal’s battle in Bavaria

Bayern Munich welcome Arsenal to Bavaria in the last-16 Champions League for what should be another great encounter between these familiar foes.

Arsenal are 5/1 which says a lot about their perceived chances at the Allianz Arena. The hope for Arsene Wenger, surely, will be for his team to still be in the tie for the return leg at the Emirates.

Incredibly, since 2013, this is the fourth time the two sides have played against each other. It’s never worked out in the Gunners’ favour on aggregate, though they did win the away fixture 2-0 four years ago.

Robert Lewandowski is unsurprisingly the favourite to score first, with SkyBet offering 14/1 on the Pole delivering and Bayern winning 2-0.

It’s 21/10 for both teams to score in the second half, and that may well be Arsenal’s best bet. While they can’t be going into the game all that high on confidence having lost two of their last three in the Premier League, they will fancy their chances of an away goal.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men haven’t lost a game since their shock European 3-2 defeat to FC Rostov on November 23, but that’s been no thanks to off-form Thomas Muller.

The Germany international’s demise is quite incredible given how highly-rated he was. The 27-year-old has scored just one Bundesliga goal all season, and while he’s managed double that in the Champions League, he’s one to avoid putting money on.

And speaking of Germans who have gone off the boil, it’s a shame you can’t bet on Mesut Ozil to go missing again. Until Arsenal’s other big names stop relying on Alexis Sanchez, it’s going to be hard for them to win any silverware this year.
