Arsenal to pile pressure on the top four at St Mary’s

Arsenal always seem to find a way to sneak into the top four.

It’s hard to accept that this could be the first season in Arsene Wenger’s reign where the Gunners have failed to make the Champions League spots, but they retain hope of a late charge after a 2-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday.

Wenger’s men can gain even more ground on their rivals by beating Southampton at St Mary’s in midweek.

The visitors are 21/20 to put even more pressure on the under fire Claude Puel, whose side admittedly have very little to play for.

Recommended bet: Arsenal to win 1-0, 2-0, or 2-1 at 5/2 with SkyBet

The major positive for the Saints is that they have a reasonably decent record against Arsenal, especially at home. In their last five league meetings, they’ve won two, drawn one, and lost two, which is better than might be expected.

Arsenal’s recent run perhaps isn’t as bad as it seems, given that they’ve lost just one of their last five in all competitions. Of course, it was a particularly significant defeat as it came against Tottenham and ensured they would finish below the Lilywhites for the first time in 22 years.

Danny Welbeck’s return to fitness could also be a major boost, with Sunday’s second goalscorer at 13/8 to score in 90 minutes. Olivier Giroud is actually at shorter odds with a lot of bookmakers, but it’s questionable whether he’ll start.
