AFCON set to impact three players’ transfer odds

Premier League fans can be forgiven for finding the African Cup of Nations rather a nuisance given its timing midway through the season.

The AFCON might not always attract as much attention as the Euros or the Copa America, but it has plenty to offer in its own right.

For a lot of players, it’s a chance to shine on the international stage and for others, it comes at a very handy time – January.

Three players in particular will be hoping to put themselves in the shop window and how it could affect the odds of them leaving.

Wilfried Zaha

Zaha only recently ditched his hopes of playing for England after featuring for their under-21s, and he’s now plying his trade with the Ivory Coast.

The Crystal Palace attacking midfielder didn’t make much of an impact in their 0-0 draw with Togo, but he’s at 5/6 to make Tottenham his next club when he eventually quits Selhurst Park. It’s 5/2 that it’s going to be this January, or 1/2 for him to go in the summer. Depending on how Ivory Coast fare, that could make it difficult for him to attend negotiations.

Emmanuel Adebayor

No bookies are even offering odds on Adebayor’s next club just yet, but that’s probably because other than that Togo game, he hasn’t played since May. This is one of the 32-year-old’s final shots at finding a new team, as many clubs might deem him too much of a liability.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Barely a day goes by when Aubameyang’s future isn’t up for debate. The Gabon forward is likely to stay at Borussia Dortmund until at least the end of the season, but he’s still at 8/1 to join a Chinese club by the end of the current transfer window. Perhaps more realistically for a player still in his prime, Paddy Power have him at 4/1 to head to his preferred choice of Real Madrid.
