It’s difficult to see a way back for Branislav Ivanovic at Chelsea.
The Serbian was dropped earlier this season by Antonio Conte, and the new manager’s decision to switch to a 3-4-3 system has made it difficult for him to regain his place.
Ivanovic is a personal friend of Roman Abramovich, which has always made life easier for him at Stamford Bridge. However, as the Blues look to challenge for the title again after last season’s tenth-placed finish, there can be no room for niceties.
Crystal Palace were reportedly considering taking the full-back on in January, but surprisingly, he isn’t willing to accept their offer of an escape from West London.
According to the Sun, Ivanovic is intent on staying and fighting for his spot in the side.
A source has told the newspaper that he partly hasn’t been playing because of a shoulder injury, so it’s possible his exodus isn’t entirely Conte’s doing.
At present, though, David Luiz, Gary Cahill, and Marcos Alonso are first-choice, and if Ivanovic wants to play regularly again, he may have no other option but to change his mind when the transfer window comes around.
