Manchester City and Arsenal are still being talked about as the main title contenders this season – yet, slowly but surely, Chelsea are creeping into the frame.
The Blues seem to have seized their 3-0 defeat to the Gunners last month and used it as a catalyst to kickstart their campaign.
After another impressive 2-0 win over Southampton on Sunday, it has to be said that Antonio Conte’s men are now among the favourites to lift the trophy in May.
And here’s five reasons why they can do it.
5 – Diego Costa is the league’s top scorer. What Liverpool, and perhaps Arsenal, lack is someone who will get 20+ goals, but as Costa’s already on eight, he can fire them to glory.
4 – Conte’s decision to adopt a 3-4-3 system was a stroke of genius. Remarkably, it’s even got the best out of David Luiz, who was superb against the Saints. Chelsea’s defence is still their weak point, but Conte’s arranged their positions so they are never left too exposed.
3 – Eden Hazard is one of the few world-class players in their line-up, but he’s a game-changer. Take a look at Spurs – they have plenty of talent, but few players who can take a match by the scruff of the neck with one moment of magic like the Belgian can.
2 – It’s often remarked upon that Liverpool have no European football this season, but neither do Chelsea. Those free midweeks give Conte more time with the players, and come the end of the season, he will have to worry far less about rotating than his counterparts.
1 – Aside from their central defence, Chelsea had one major weakness last season – the central midfield. Bringing in N’Golo Kante was hardly a master stroke by Roman Abramovich, as it was a blaringly obvious move. However, there’s no denying that the Frenchman has turned them around, and he’s the reason they finally have a spine again. A new Makelele in the making.
