What next for Cristiano Ronaldo? We explore where he could end up.

Manchester United fans have long entertained the idea of a homecoming for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner is reportedly intent on leaving Real Madrid after being accused of tax evasion.

Despite being 32, the Portuguese star is likely to command a huge fee, the likes of which only United, Paris Saint-Germain, and clubs from the Chinese Super League, will be able to afford.

Old Trafford seems the obvious destination, with Ronaldo at 11/8 with Ladbrokes to complete a sensational return. His relationship with Jose Mourinho was strained at times during the latter’s stint at the Bernabeu, but he is known to be close with Sir Alex Ferguson, and that could be a factor in his decision.

It also coincides with United being on the hunt for a goalscorer. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure and an inconsistent season for Marcus Rashford means it is almost certain the Red Devils will be strengthening in attack.

Ronaldo’s teammate Alvaro Morata looked set to join up with United, but this saga could now affect that deal. If CR7 does go, Real may be reluctant to lose Morata as well, so perhaps all United can hope is that they’ll sign at least one of them.

If Ronaldo goes elsewhere, PSG are the second favourites at 2/1. The question has to be asked whether he would be willing to play in Ligue 1, even if the standard would probably flatter him.

A switch to any Chinese club is at 5/2, but again, he still has a lot to offer at the highest level.

Of course, it can’t be ruled out that he’ll stay in the Spanish capital. While he doesn’t have the easiest of relationships with the Madridistas, remaining with Real is his best chance of winning more European titles. The club are desperate to smooth things over regardless of the ongoing tax case, but it remains to be seen whether they’ll succeed.
